Home Automotive Braking Systems Brake Drums

PostHeaderIcon Drum Brakes

Drum brakes are a cheaper braking alternative fitted to the rear wheels of many lower performance cars by manufactures to save on production costs. The brake shoe has the lining riveted to the shoe and when braking is applied pushes the shoes outwards against the inside of the brake drum. The friction converts kinetic energy (energy created using motion) to thermal energy (heat caused by friction).

Brake drums are becoming redundant due to their lower ability to dissipate heat which leads to a higher chance of brake fade (less effective the longer the brakes are held). In addition to heating problems, due to build-up of water within the drum, drum brakes perform poorer when wet.
